Somerset Robotics

Last week, our Savannah Heights Intermediate Robotics teams had a special visitor during their meeting.

“I’m excited to help out with the team,” said Toyota Electrical Engineer Leigh Young. “Engineering, instructing, and Legos are very important to me.”

Somerset ISD robotics teams compete in the FIRST Lego League every year. FIRST gives schools the opportunity to invite engineers into the classroom.

“Bringing Leigh in and having her as an on campus/site resource will bring us to the next level as we compete and use her in our innovation project,” said Somerset ISD Robotics Lead Tabitha Slaughter.

Working in teams and in solo projects brings many learning opportunities to the students. Reading, mathematics, science and social skills  are all exercised during the learning  process and competition. By embracing the Core Values of FIRST Lego League, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.

The Core Values of FIRST Lego League are: discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork, and fun.
